Hairy Woodpecker
Picoides villosus
The Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus) is a widespread, resident bird across most of North America. It may be found in a wide variety of habitats from lowland southeastern pine forest to high in the Rocky Mountains. The individual shown at right was in some willow trees at a picnic ground at Palo Duro Reservoir, Hansford Co., Texas in November, 2005. The shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
The Hairy Woodpeckers of the southwest U.S. are a little duskier below and not as clean white as their eastern counterparts. They also show a reduced amount of white spotting in the shoulder area. The female in the next 3 shots was on Mt. Lemon, Tucson, Pima Co., Arizona, in May, 2008. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
