Downy Woodpecker
Picoides pubescens
The Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) is a resident species across most of the United States and Canada. It is a small woodpecker, but can be quite vocal and active, so it is often easy to find. The first 12 shots on this page were taken in Lipscomb, Lipscomb Co., Texas, in April, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender. This pair of birds was quite active on this occasion and afforded many photo opportunities. The male has a splash of red on the back of the head.
The male Downy Woodpecker in the next 2 shots was in Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Randall Co., Texas, in January 2009. These 2 shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
The next 6 images show a female Downy Woodpecker investigating and working on a potential nesting cavity in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in March, 2010. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
The male Downy shown here is probably the mate of the bird in the above shots.
