| The Costa's Hummingbird (Calypte costae) is a species of the deserts of the southwestern United States but it has wandered east to south Texas and north to Canada. The species is also common in parts of northern Mexico. The first 6 images on this page show a male in Catalina, Pima Co., Arizona, in March, 2009. Hummingbirds are often seen wiping their bills on a limb or twig, apparently removing debris or other substance from the bill. This male, interestingly, was cleaning its bill by grasping it with its foot and pulling the bill through the clenched foot. I had never seen this behavior before. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens. |
