Common Merganser
Mergus merganser
The Common Merganser (Mergus merganser) is a large diving duck which breeds across much of Canada and parts of the northern and Rocky Mountain areas of the United States. The species winters in the central portions of the United States and sometimes into the southern states and into Mexico. The first 8 shots here show a group of female Common Mergansers swimming in the Chilkoot River at Haines, Alaska, in August, 2008. These ducks are powerful swimmers and can easily swim upstream against a strong current. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens.
