Cactus Wren
Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus
The Cactus Wren (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus) is a widespread resident across the American Southwest and Mexico. It is found in desert and scrubby areas and often makes its nest in the middle of a cactus or other thorny thicket. The first 4 images on this page were taken in Tucson, Pima Co., Arizona, in April, 2003, with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens. One of the shots shows a wren at its nest.
The Cactus Wren shown here was at Las Cruces, Dona Ana Co., New Mexico, in December, 1989.
The next 3 shots of Cactus Wrens were taken in Tucson, Pima Co., Arizona, in May, 2008, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender. The last of these 3 shots shows an adult with a small grasshopper in its bill which it was delivering to hungry young in the next.
The next 4 images were taken in Catalina, Pima Co., Arizona, in March, 2009, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender. The first image of the 4 might be captioned "sometimes I just gotta dance!"
