Boat-tailed Grackle
Quiscalus major
The Boat-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus major) is quite similar in appearance to the Great-tailed Grackle. The Boat-tailed, however, typically prefers more marshy habitats and has different vocalizations. The Boat-tailed also has a steeper forehead than does the Great-tailed. Along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, Boat-tailed Grackles have brown eyes, quite different from the yellow eye of Great-tailed Grackles. On the Atlantic coast, however, Boat-taileds show yellow eyes. The first three images on this page were all shot in March, 2001, at Anahuac N.W.R., Chambers Co., Texas, with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens on Fuji Velvia. The 1st and 3rd shots show a male while a female is in the middle.
The male Boat-tailed Grackle in the next two shots shown here was at Lake Tohopekaliga, Osceola Co., Florida, in February, 2007. These were digital shots with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
The shots of the female Boat-tailed Grackles on the lily pads as well as the perched female and the displaying male in the next few shots were all taken at the same location and time as the shots just preceding.
The next two shots of a foraging male Boat-tailed Grackle shown here were taken along the edge of Lake Kissimmee, Osceola Co., Florida, in March, 2007, with the same gear as the shots just preceding.
