Boat-tailed Grackle

| The Boat-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus major) is quite similar in appearance to the Great-tailed Grackle. The Boat-tailed, however, typically prefers more marshy habitats and has different vocalizations. The Boat-tailed also has a steeper forehead than does the Great-tailed. Along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, Boat-tailed Grackles have brown eyes, quite different from the yellow eye of Great-tailed Grackles. On the Atlantic coast, however, Boat-taileds show yellow eyes. The first three images on this page were all shot in March, 2001, at Anahuac N.W.R., Chambers Co., Texas, with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens on Fuji Velvia.
