Black-chinned Sparrow
Spizella atrogularis
The Black-chinned Sparrow (Spizella atrogularis) breeds in portions of the southwestern United States in montane habitats. It winters in lower elevations in some of these same areas as well as south into Mexico. The Black-chinned Sparrow in the top image shown here was a wintering bird in desert habitat near Catalina, Pima Co., Arizona, in March, 2009. This image was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
The next three shots of Black-chiined Sparrows were taken near Oracle, Pinal Co., Arizona, in October, 2013. This shot and the next one show an immature bird in first winter plumage.
