The American Tree Sparrow (Spizella arborea) breeds at the edge of the tundra regions of northern Canada and much of Alaska. It prefers areas of scattered trees and brush. The species winters across much of the United States south to north Texas, Arkansas, and Kentucky. The singing bird on the right was near Nome, Alaska, in June, 2012. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens.
The signing American Tree Sparrow on the right was at the same time as place as the previous shot. Note the purple stains around the bill from a berries the bird had been feeding on.
The next 14 shots of American Tree Sparrows were taken along the Denali Highway, Alaska, in June, 2012. All these images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
