Fulvous Owl
Strix fulvescens
The Fulvous Owl (Strix fulvescens) is a species of cloud forest and other humid evergreen woodland of southern Mexico and adjacent Guatemala. It also occurs is some areas of El Salvador and Honduras. It is a close relative of the Barred Owl and Spotted Owl which are more familiar to observers in the United States. Its behavior and voice are similar to those other Strix species. Both shots shown here were taken in the El Triunfo Cloud Forest of Chiapas, Mexico. The shot at right is from March, 2005, while the next shot was two years earlier. Both shots were digital captures with a Canon EOS 10D (right) or EOS 1D Mark II (below) and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender. The 2005 shot was with a 580 flash and the 2003 shot was with available (not much!) light.
