The Nene (Branta sandvicensis) is an endangered species and the state bird of Hawaii. During a short visit to Hawaii we found the species to be readily found at an old military camp at Hawaii Volcanos National Park on Hawaii's big island. On several mornings and evenings we found as many as 15 Nenes foraging on the mowed lawn of the parade grounds as well as resting on nearby areas. Many of the birds were banded, but many were not. The images on this page were all taken in August, 2012, at Hawaii Volcanos National Park with a Canon EOS 1D and a Canon EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens.
