Yellow-billed Pintail
Anas georgica
The Yellow-billed Pintail (Anas georgica) is a widespread duck of southern South America. The nominate race of the bird, which occurs only on the island of South Georgia, is called the South Georgia Pintail (A. g. georgica). The digital shots on this page show South Georgia Pintails at Stromness, South Georgia, in January, 2004, and were taken with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS lens and 2X extender. There are thought to be only about 1000 to 1500 pairs of this subspecies on South Georgia.
On the right are three more shots of the South Georgia race of Yellow-billed Pintail. These three shots are scanned slides. The first image, showing a bird stretching a wing, was taken in January, 1996, at Salisbury Plain, South Georgia, with a Canon T-90 and a 400mm F/4.5 lens on Kodak Eckachrome 100 film. The next two shots were taken in the abandoned whaling town of Grytviken in January, 1999. These two shots were taken with a Canon 1N and EF 70-200 F/2.8 L lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Provia film.
