Rock Shag
Phalacrocorax magellanicus
The Rock Shag (Phalacrocorax magellanicus) nests on a number of sub-antarctic islands as well as much of the coast of southern South America and the Falklands. The first five shots here were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS lens in February, 2005, on Bleaker Island in the Falklands. These birds were perched on the edge of a 100-ft high cliff over the ocean near a small nesting colony. The third shot shows two dark youngsters at the nest with an adult behind them.
