Antarctic Shag
Phalacrocorax bransfieldensis
The Antarctic Shag (Phalacrocorax bransfieldensis) is considered a member of the "Blue-eyed Shag" complex, formerly considered all one species. The "blue eye" is actually skin surrounding the dark iris and is most evident in the breeding season. This species breeds on the Antarctic Peninsula, the South Shetlands, and at Elephant Island. The shot at right was taken at Peterman Island on the Antarctic Peninsula in December, 2003. The next shot was taken in the same area in February, 2005. Both were digital captures. The shot at right was taken with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS lens.
