Cassin's Kingbird
Tyrannus vociferans
The Cassin's Kingbird (Tyrannus vociferans) breeds in the American Southwest from parts of west Texas to southern California. Its unique vocalizations are a familiar sound to those who live within its range and habitat. It is similar to Western Kingbird, but has a darker chest, a contrasting white throat patch, larger bill and a different tail shape and pattern. The Cassin's Kingbird shots of this page were taken in June, 2001, in Jeff Davis Co., Texas, with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Velvia.
The Cassin's Kingbird below was perched on a roadside fence in the Davis Mountains, Jeff Davis Co., Texas, in September, 2006. It was photographed with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
