| The Barred Owl (Strix varia) is a widespread resident across the eastern half of the United States and across much of Canada and parts of the west coast of the U.S. This is a woodland owl which may be common in swampy habitats, river bottomlands, or old growth forests. The voice of this bird is one of the sounds of nature which I truly enjoy. The first three shots here show a Barred Owl along a stream which leads into Lake Tohopekaliga, Osceola Co., Florida. These shots were taken in February, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens. |

| The next 5 shots of Barred Owl were taken in Utopia, Uvalde Co., Texas, in April, 2008, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 l IS lens. The 3rd and 4th shots show several Blue Jays pestering the owl and in the 5th shot the owl is coughing up a pellet. Owls get rid of fur and bones from their prey in this manner. |
