The American Pipit (Anthus rubescens) is a ground-dwelling bird which nests on rocky tundra in the western United States and Canada. During the winter it may be found across the southern third of the U.S. and much of Mexico, and usually near water. The wintering bird shown here was in Kenedy Co., Texas, in January, 2000, and was photographed with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 600mm F/4 L lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Provia film.
