American Oystercatcher
Haematopus palliatus
The American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) is resident along the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico coastlines of the United States as well as the area around the Gulf of California. It uses is powerful bill to open oysters and other food items. The first image was taken in January, 1993, at San Luis Pass, Galveston Co., Texas with a Canon T-90 and Sigma 500mm F/4.5 lens on Kodachrome 64. The next shot was taken in August, 1998, on North Padre Island, Kleberg Co., Texas, with the same equipment but on Fuji Sensia 100.
The next three images were digital captures at the Texas City Dike, Texas City, Galveston Co., Texas, in February,2005, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The next five shots show American Oystercatchers on the Galapagos Islands in July, 2007. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS lens. The two shots of the birds walking on sand were at Santa Cruz Island and the birds on lava were at Santiago Island.
