White-throated Sparrow
Zonotrichia albicollis
The White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) is a bird which breeds across most of Canada as well as the northeastern United States. Its song is a familiar summer sound of northern forests. Canadians claim that it sounds like "Oh Sweet Canada, Canada, Canada" while some others think the bird is saying "Old Sam Peabody, Peabody, Peabody." Whichever you prefer, it is a wonderful song! The species winters across much of the eastern and southern United States. The first image was taken in Bastrop Co., Texas, in March, 2006, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and an EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender. The next shot was taken in Jasper Co., Texas in March, 2010, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 800mm F.5.6 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
The next 11 shots show territorial White-throated Sparrows near Errol, Coos Co., New Hampshire, in June, 2010. These 11 shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
The next two shots of White-throated Sparrow show a wintering bird at Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Randall Co., Texas, in January, 2011.
