Whimbrel
Numenius phaeopus
The Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) is a shorebird which nests in the Arctic tundra and winters in wetlands along the coasts of the southern U.S. south into South America. The first shot shown here shows a Whimbrel near its nest in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, in June, 1988. The next two shots show a spring migrant at Fort Myers, Lee Co., Florida, in April, 1996. These 3 shots are scanned slides and I do not have the original photo information for any of these.
The next two shots of Whimbrel were taken on Tower Island in the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador, in August, 2010, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens.
The next 11 shots show Whimbrels on the nesting grounds along the Denali Highway in Alaska in June, 2012. The images were all taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens.
