Snowcap
Microchera albocoronata
The Snowcap (Microchera albocoronata) ranges from Honduras to western Panama, but it can be extremely local and hard to find. It is a tiny bird, only about 2 1/2 inches long. When flying through dark forest understory, it sometimes looks like an insect with a headlight since the white cap is quite visible. This individual, a male, was photographed at Rancho Naturalista, near Turrialba, Provincia de Cartago, Costa Rica in October 1995. A Canon T-90 and Sigma 500mm F4.5 lens with a 50mm extension tube with a Fresnel flash was used for both photos. The film was Fuji Sensia 100.
