Rufous Hummingbird
Selasphorus rufus
The Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) nests in the Rocky Mountains of the western United States and winters in western Mexico. During migration it may show up anywhere, even the east coast of the U.S. It is a common visitor to feeders in west Texas in late summer and fall. The first 3 shots shown here, of immature or females, are from the Davis Mountains of west Texas. The shot at right was in August, 1999, showing a bird perched on the tip of a cholla cactus branch. The 2 shots on the right were taken in September, 2001. These shots were taken with Canon EOS 1N bodies and a 300mm F/2.8 L lens and 2X extender on Fuji Velvia. Scroll down for more images.
The next 6 images show an adult male Rufous Hummingbird in Breckenridge, Summit Co., Colorado, in July, 2008. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
