Western Red Damsel
Amphiagrion abbreviatum
The Western Red Damsel (Amphiagrion abbreviatum) is a small damselfly of the western United States and parts of western Canada. The first 3 shots on this page (male above and two females below) were taken in the Malheur National Forest, Grant Co., Oregon, in July, 2008, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender. This species is visually very similar to Eastern Red Damsel (A. saucium), and care is needed to make an identification when in areas of possible overlap.
The image of the young female Western Red Damsel to the right and the following three shots of males were all taken in Cottonwood Canyon, Comanche National Grasslands, Baca Co., Colorado, in July, 2011, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
