Vermilion Saddlebags
Tramea abdominalis
The Vermilion Saddlebags (Tramea abdominalis) is a species which was originally known only from south Florida within the United States, but several years ago it was found in deep south Texas as well. The species has different shaped maculation on the wings from our more familiar saddlebags as well as a different pattern of black spots on the dorsal side of the outer abdominal segments. The first 4 shots here were taken at Santa Ana N.W.R., Hidalgo Co., Texas, in June, 2009, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 l IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
