Spangled Skimmer
Libellula cyanea
The Spangled Skimmer (Libellula cyanea) is a dragon of the eastern United States, occurring west to parts of east Texas. The flashy black and white stigmas are quite conspicuous in flight or when perched. The first shot here was taken in Uncertain, Harrison Co., Texas in June, 2003, with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200 mm F/2.8 L IS lens with 2X extender and 550 EX flash.
The male Spangled Skimmers in the next 3 shots were in the Ouachita National Forest, Montgomery Co., Arkansas, in June, 2009. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The next 4 images of male Spangled Skimmers were taken with the same gear as previously described, but along the Little Black River, Ripley Co., Missouri, in June, 2009.
The male Spangled Skimmer shown here was in Rockingham Co., New Hampshire, in August, 2009. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The next three shots of female Spangled Skimmers were taken at Red Slough Wildlife Management Area, McCurtin Co., Oklahoma, in May, 2011, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
The male Spangled Skimmer on the right and the female in the next shot were at Unicoi State Park, White Co., Georgia, in May, 2011. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
The female Spangled Skimmer in the next two shots was along Big Cypress Creek, Franklin Co., Texas, in June, 2011.
The male Spangled Skimmer on the right was at Gus Engeling Wildlife Management Area, Anderson Co., Texas, in June, 2011.
