| The Southeastern Spinyleg (Dromogomphus armatus) is a very uncommon and local Gomphid of the southeast U.S. Records of the species range from West Virginia south into Florida and west to Louisiana. It can be quite wary and difficult to approach in the field when found. The male at right and female next (three shots) shown here were at the Hannahatchee Creek Wildlife Management Area, Stewart Co., Georgia, in July, 2005. These digital images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 580 EX flash. Note the spines visible on the legs from which this group gets its common name. Giff Beaton, Cheryl Johnson, and I watched as several of these dragons actively caught butterflies of several species. The female in one of the following shots is shown with a Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae) it has captured. |  |
