The Slough Amberwing (Perithemis domitia) is essentially a small dragonfly of Central America which occurs along the U.S. border with Mexico in quiet, shaded waterways. The first 2 shots show here were taken in Quemado, Maverick Co., Texas in September, 2003, with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200 mm F/2.8 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 550 EX flash. These shots represent the first Maverick County records of the species which has only been recorded in a few Texas locations. Compare this dragon, especially the dorsal abdominal pattern, to the similar Eastern Amberwing. The third shot shows a male Slough Amberwing in Hidalgo Co., Texas in October, 2003. This shot was taken with the same set up as above.
The next two shots of Slough Amberwing were taken along a quiet section of the San Antonio River in San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas, in September, 2008, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and flash. This location is near the northern known edge of the range of this species.
The next 3 shots show a female Slough Amberwing in Weslaco, Hidalgo Co., Texas, in September, 2008. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and Canon 580 flash.
