Selys' Sundragon
Helocordulia selysii
The Selys' Sundragon (Helocordulia selysii) is a member of the Corduliidae family of dragonflies. The species occurs in the southeastern United States and ranges west to east Texas. The two shots of a Selys' Sundragon shown here were taken in the San Jacinto National Forest, San Jacinto Co., Texas, in March, 2008. The insect did not perch while we watched it, but I was able to get a few in-flight shots. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The next three shots show a male Selys' Sundragon at the Gus Engling Wildlife Management Area, Anderon Co., Texas, in March, 2011. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
