Ruby Meadowhawk
Sympetrum rubicundulum
The Ruby Meadowhawk (Sympetrum rubicundulum) is a small dragonfly which is widespread across the northeastern United States. The field identification of this species and several closely related species can be very difficult at best and the taxonomy is not agreed upon by many experts. The images shown here are thought to be this species, but I certainly welcome any corrections. The first two shots were taken in Sugarcreek, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio, in August, 2003, with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 550 EX flash.

The next six shots, all males, are from Oostburg, Sheboygan Co., Wisconsin. These shots were taken in August, 2003, with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 550 EX flash.
The legs of an insect prey item are visible in the mandibles of the dragonfly in this image.
The next two shots show a female Ruby Meadowhawk in Black Hawk Co., Iowa, in July, 2004. In the western part of their range, females may show considerable amber in the wings.
