Pale Snaketail
Ophiogomphus severus
The Pale Snaketail (Ophiogomphus severus) is a dragonfly of western rivers and streams from parts of northern New Mexico north and westward through the Rockies to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and into western Canada. It may be a common species at some locations. The first 10 images on this page were taken along the South Fork John Day River, Grant Co., Oregon, in July, 2008, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The dragonfly shown here is emerging from its exuviae on a rock in mid-stream.
