Ornate Pennant
Celithemis ornata
The Ornate Pennant (Celithemis ornata) is sometimes called Faded Pennant in some references. The species occurs from New Jersey southward to Florida then west to far east Texas. In Texas the species may be hard to find but it is known to occur in several eastern counties. The first 11 images on this page were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 l IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash. These shots were taken in Jasper Co., Texas, in June, 2009. The first 6 shots show a mature male while the following 5 shots show a younger male. The species, especially younger ones, is somewhat similar to Amanda's Pennant so care is needed in separating the two in the field.
The next 11 shots of Ornate Pennant were taken in the Angelina National Forest, Jasper Co., Texas, in April, 2010. The shot shown here shows a pair in copula. All these images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The next 3 images show mature male Ornate Pennants.
The Ornate Pennant shown here is a young male that has not yet turned red.
The next 6 images show a female Ornate Pennant.
The male Ornate Pennant shown here was near Boykin Springs, Jasper Co., Texas, in April, 2010. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The younger male (not yet red) was at the same spot as the previous shot.
The next 2 shots show a female at the same location as the preceding 2 images.
The male Ornate Pennant at right had wandered into a spider web and perished.
The pair of Ornate Pennants in copula shown here was near Boykin Springs, Jasper Co., Texas, in April, 2010.
The male Ornate Pennant on the right was in Conway, Horry Co., South Carolina, in May, 2012.
