Metallic Pennant
Idiataphe cubensis
Within the United States, the Metallic Pennant (Idiataphe cubensis) occurs only in south Florida and extreme southern Texas. This species was first discovered in Texas in June, 2008, by Martin Reid. I had seen the species on several occasions, but they always seemed to stay up too high for decent photos. In October, 2009, however, Martin and I and Tom Pendleton, were at Bentsen Rio Grande State Park when Martin found a lone male Metallic Pennant perched at eye level on a stick out over the resaca, and I was able to get several images of this rare Texas dragon. The first 4 shots on this page were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
