| The Mayan Setwing (Dythemis maya) occurs in the United States only in parts of west Texas and Arizona. The first two shots here were taken in September, 2004, in Big Bend Ranch State Park in Presidio Co., Texas with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300 mm F4 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 550 EX flash. We found this species in an isolated desert canyon called Ojito Adentro. The upper portions of this canyon were quite wooded and shady with flowing clear water and some fairly deep pools. Each of the pools had from two to six or seven Mayan Setwings in attendance. Females, though present, never perched so I was not able to get shots of them on this occasion. This brilliant red dragonfly is a very flashy critter indeed and they made quite a scene as the males jousted with one another over the shaded pools. |

This shot, from September, 2005, shows the primary location where this species has been found within Texas. There have been a few scattered records at other locations, but it is along the stream flowing under the distant trees in this image where the species is most regular. |
