Halloween Pennant
Celithemis eponina
The Halloween Pennant (Celithemis eponina) is a medium sized dragonfly which occurs across most of the eastern U.S. It is a striking dragonfly, one of the most beautiful in the country. It is hard to misidentify with its orange and black wings. The shot here, of a male, was a digital capture in June, 2003, in Austin, Travis Co., Texas with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 300mm F4L IS lens. It was fairly windy, and the dragon was opening and closing its wings in an effort to retain its perch. Most of my shots were poor due to the wind, but I got a few nice ones like this. The next shot, a female, was shot at the same location and with the same equipment in May, 2003.
