Great Basin Snaketail
Ophiogomphus morrisoni
The Great Basin Snaketail (Ophiogomphus morrisoni) is a dragonfly of streams and rivers in parts of the western United States in California, Nevada, and Oregon. It may be locally common in some habitats. The species commonly perches on the ground, but may also perch on vegetation, a stump, or a rock. The first 10 shots on this page were taken near the Crane Prairie Reservoir in the Deschutes National Forest, Deschutes Co., Oregon, in August, 2008, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F.4 l IS lens and 2X extender and flash. A male is shown here. This species may often appear visually very similar to Sinuous Snaketail (O. occidentis) and care should be used in separating them since they may occur together.
The next two shots show a female that is missing a couple of her legs.
The next 7 shots are all males.
The next 4 images of Great Basin Snaketail were taken along Crescent Creek, Deschutes National Forest, Klamath Co., Oregon, in August, 2008. These next 4 shots are all males.
