Fragile Forktail
Ischnura posita
The Fragile Forktail (Ischnura posita) is a tiny green and black damselfly of slow streams and quiet ponds and marshes in the eastern U.S. The photos here are digital captures at Balcones Canyonlands NWR, Burnet Co., Texas in July, 2003, and were shot with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 180 mm F/3.5 Macro lens with a ring flash. Note the "exclamation point" marking on the back of the thorax, one of the field characters of this species.
The pair of Fragile Forktails in copula shown here was at Pond Creek N.W.R., Sevier Co., Arkansas, in September, 2007. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 180mm F/3.5 Macro and 1.4X extender and macro flash.
The next 2 shots shown here were taken in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in late February, 2009. A Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender was used.
The next 2 shots shown here show a male and female Fragile Forktail in Jasper Co., Texas, in June, 2009. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 l IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash. Note that each of these individuals shows an unbroken humeral stripe which is unusual.
The next 3 shots of male Fragile Forktails were all taken near Salem, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire, in July, 2009, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The next 2 shots show a female Fragile Forktail in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in March, 2010. These 2 images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash. In the second image the forktail has a prey item in its jaws.
