Evening Skimmer
Tholymis citrina
The Evening Skimmer (Tholymis citrina) is a very rare dragonfly within the United States, occurring only in southern Florida and southern Texas. The species ranges south all the way to Argentina and Chile. The species usually feeds only at dawn and dusk and at other times of the day may sometimes be found in shady or dark woodlands where it is very difficult to spot. The one shown here was in Santa Ana N.W.R., Hidalgo Co., Texas, in September, 2009. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
