The Edmund's Snaketail (Ophiogomphus edmundo) has one of the smallest ranges and is one of the least known of North American dragonflies. It is known from just a few counties in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The species was thought to be extinct in the 1970s and 1980s but was rediscovered in North Carolina in 1994. It is a dragon of clear, cold, rivers and streams with rocks and riffles in the southern Appalachians. The first 11 images on this page were taken on the Chattooga River which forms the border between Rabun Co., Georgia and Oconee Co., South Carolina, in May, 2011, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash. The first 10 images show males.
The shot on the right shows a female Edmund's Snaketail that had been netted.
