Ebony Jewelwing
Calopteryx maculata
The Ebony Jewelwing (Calopteryx maculata) is a large, dark damselfly of shaded streams and rivers across much of the eastern United States. It is a stunning creature with a bouncy flight and courtship displays. Several of these damsels dancing over a stream create quite a beautiful scene. The damsels in the top 4 shots on this page were all digital captures in May 2003 in the Angelina National Forest near Zavalla, Angelina Co., Texas. They were shot with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 300 mm F4 L IS lens with a 1.4 extender and 550 EX flash. The male has dark wings and the female shows white stigmas.
The male in the next two shots was in Bastrop Co., Texas, in May, 2008. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and flash.
The female shown here was in San Jacinto Co., Texas, also in May, 2008.
The male Ebony Jewelwing shown here was along the Fourche Renault Creek, Washington Co., Missouri, in June, 2009. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and flash.
The pair of Ebony Jewelwings in copula shown here and the male below were photographed in Broome Co., New York, in July, 2009, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The next 3 shots of male Ebony Jewelwings were taken along Indian Creek, Jasper Co., Texas, in April, 2010, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
