The Clearlake Clubtail (Gomphus australis) is a dragon of clear, sandy-bottomed lakes in the southeastern United States. It ranges west to eastern Louisiana and north along the coast to the South Carolina and North Carolina border area. Abdominal segment 9 (S9) is especially long which serves as a field character for this species. The first six shots on this page, all males, were taken at Cheraw State Park, Chesterfield Co., South Carolina, in May, 2012, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
