The Checkered Setwing (Dythemis fugax) occurs in the U.S, mainly in Texas and Oklahoma. The first two shots here were digital captures in Austin, Travis Co., Texas in May, 2003, and were shot with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 300 mm F4 L IS lens with a 1.4 extender and 550 EX flash. The next shot is of a male with a bright red face and was shot with the same equipment in Lost Canyon, Real Co., Texas in May, 2003. Mature males with such a face look like a little red light bulb as they fly around a small pond!


The next two shots of an immature Checkered Setwing were taken in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in May, 2005, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.

The mature male Checkered Setwing shown here was at a small park called "The Post", at Marathon, Brewster Co., Texas, in September, 2005, and was photographed with the same gear as previously described.
The young female Checkered Setwing shown here was at Millwood Lake, Howard Co., Arkansas, in September, 2007. It was photographed with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
