Broad-striped Forceptail
Aphylla angustifolia
Within the United States, the Broad-striped Forceptail (Aphylla angustifolia) occurs in southern Texas and Louisiana. It is a fairly large and showy clubtail that is quite similar in appearance to the Narrow-striped Forceptail (Aphylla protracta). The shots shown here of a male (first two photos) and a female (3rd and 4th photos) were digital captures in Austin, Travis Co., Texas in July, 2003. We were at a small, duckweed-covered pond, and moderate numbers of these forceptails were found resting on vegetation in the immediate area. The shots were taken with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200 mm F2.8 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 550 EX flash.
The next shot, of a young male, was taken in San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas, in August, 2005, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
