American Emerald
Cordulia shurtleffii
The American Emerald (Cordulia shurtleffii) occurs across most of Canada and Alaska as well as parts of the northern United States. It is a dragonfly of forest ponds, lakes and bogs in the northern latitudes and may sometimes be found foraging along woodland edges. The individual in the top 4 shots on this page was perched near the ground in a small bush in the Willamette National Forest, Lane Co., Oregon, in August, 2008. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS land and 2X extender.
The male American Emerald shown here was at Buzzard Swamp in the Allegheny National Forest, Forest Co., Pennsylvania, in June, 2010.
