Lesser Black-backed Gull
Larus fuscus
The Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus) is a western palearctic species which is rare to locally uncommon in the United States. Before the 1980s the species was considered a true rarity in the U.S., but in the past 20 years it has become a regular and expected winter visitor, if still somewhat notable. The species takes 4 years to reach maturity. The first 6 images on this page show a 2nd-winter Lesser Black-backed Gull at Port Aransas, Nueces Co., Texas in February, 2010. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 50D and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
Several Laughing Gulls are around the Lesser Black-backed Gull in this shot.
This adult Lesser Black-backed Gull in the next 2 shots was photographed at Quintana, Brazoria Co., Texas, in March, 2007.
