Green-backed Firecrown
Sephanoides sephanoides
The Green-backed Firecrown (Sephanoides sephanoides) occurs in western Argentina and Chile. It can be fairly common in some locations, especially the island of Isla Robinson Crusoe, 350 miles off the Chilean coast. Go to the page about the Juan Fernandez Firecrown for more information about this island and its endemic hummingbird. The photos on this page were taken on Isla Robinson Crusoe in February 2000 with a Canon EOS 3 and an EF 300mm F4 IS lens and flash on Fuji Velvia pushed one stop.
Like its cousin the Juan Fernandez Firecrown, the Green-backed often hangs from flower petals or leaves with its feet as the individual above is doing.
