Gadwall
Anas stepera
The Gadwall (Anas stepera) is a widespread duck across all of North America. In general it breeds across much of the northern United States and Canada, and winters along both coasts and much of the southern U.S. and Mexico. The three shots shown here were taken at Bosque del Apache N.W.R., Socorro Co., New Mexico, in November, 2005. The shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender. A male is shown on the immediate left as he comes in to land, while two shots of females in flight are just below.
