Broad-winged Hawk
Buteo platypterus
The Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus) breeds across most of the eastern United States as well as a large area of Canada. This species, unlike most raptors, migrates in large flocks. There have been observations of as many as 100,000 birds tallied in a single day passing over some areas of south Texas during September. The species winters in South America. The juvenile Broad-winged Hawk in the photo at right was perched on a cable at Gulliver's Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada, in September, 1992. The shot was taken with a Canon T-90 and FD 400mm F/4.5 lens on Kodachrome 200 film.
