Black-throated Sparrow
Amphispiza bilineata
The Black-throated Sparrow (Amphispiza bilineata) is an attractive little desert sparrow which is quite common across much of the western United States and Mexico. Its song is one of the common sounds that is heard in the Chihuahuan Desert of west Texas. The bird at right was photographed in May, 1989 at Rio Grande Village, Big Bend National Park, Brewster Co., Texas with a hand-held Minolta X-570 camera and Vivitar 120-500mm F5.6 lens on Kodachrome 200 with available light. The shots at right were all digital captures in the spring and early summer 2006 in western Hidalgo Co., Texas. These shots were al taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The bird here was a territorial male. The 2nd shot shows the bird singing.
